Steelant B for sealing sheet piles or as a pile driving aid

Application

Heated Installation of HydroPhobic water-seal.

Purpose

Water-Seal for steel pile interlocks before driving or threading.
Compatible Uses:

  • -  Larssen interlock steel sheet piles.
  • -  Ball + Socket interlock steel sheet piles.
  • -  Weld-On Clutch bars of both Larssen, Ball + Socket on King Pile
  • -  DTH (Down the Hole / Ringbit-) pipes with weld-on interlocks.
  • -  Cold form sheets where water integrity is required.
Features

Steelant B is a non hazardous water seal containing a proprietary mixture of bitumen, polymers and other additives e.g. UV-stabilizers.
Steelant B is hydrophobic by nature and carries a potable water-safe rating (Carbon index is below detection limit acc. DIN EN ISO 9377:2001-07).

The sealing properties are based on memory elasticity.
Steelant B has a high adhesive strength and is easy to install. Steel sheet / Installed piles can be driven and used immediately after cooling down (approx. 1 hour).
Steelant B has a laboratory-tested pressure resistance of 5.8 bar (≅ 580 kN/m2). For calculations in accordance with EN12063, we recommend
using ρ = 2.0 x 10 -9 m/s to take practical building calculations.

Installation

a) Melting the material
Melting must be done in such a way that the Steelant B does not exceed the upper thresh-hold temperature of 190 °C (370 °F) at anytime.
For this purpose, a melting pot should be used that is fitted with an agitator and a thermostat utilizing indirect thermal oil heating.
If using a roofing tar cooker, make sure that the material is stirred regularly and that the temperature is closely monitored and properly controlled.
Overheating will result in a deterioration of quality or failure.

b) Requirements for the substrate
The sheet pile interlock must be dry, clean and dust-free.
Rolling skin, scale, saw burrs and rust must be removed.

c) Application into Steel-pile interlocks
After melting, the material is poured into the interlocks using a heated hose / pressured lance or manually, gravity fed with a spouted can.
The steel piles / sheet piles must be aligned as horizontally as possible and the ends of the sheet pile interlocks on both sides must be secured against leakage.
After installation the installed material must cool down.
When the installed steel pile interlocks are cool to human touch, the installed piles can now be used.
The tips of the locks to be threaded must be rounded and chamfered ≥ 10 cm (4”).

Weather

Installation requires warm and dry interlocks. Indoors / under cover is best, outdoors is acceptable provided the interlocks are clean and dry.
The interlocks of the steel piles should have a surface temperature of over 0 °C.
In sub-0 °C, where ambient temperature is freezing or below, we recommend the use of Steelant B Flex.
